Every year Florence celebrates Easter Sunday in a truly special way. The Scampia del Carro is a fixed event with more than 350 years of tradition : it is a 2-3 story high tower (also called “Il Brindellone”) pulled by two oxen adorned with garlands.
From the altar of the Cathedral the Archbishop lights a rocket in the shape of a dove, “la Colombina”, which flies out of the church along a wire that hits the Cart in the square, giving life to a spectacular fireworks display that is met with applause from the entire audience: this is what we mean by the explosion of the Cart!
